![]() Lex At its essence, hip-hop has always been about giving a voice to a generation. While many rappers seek fame by imitating the images and stories of past and current greats, those who truly rise to the top always have something new to offer. Enter Lex, a Black and Jewish Harvard grad who rhymes in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. Offering a completely new perspective and style, one that crosses cultures and connects with people across the globe, Lex is poised to make a huge impact on hip-hop music. Shortly after Lex was born in Berkeley, California, his parents separated. Alone, with a newborn and on welfare, Lex¡¯s mom enrolled in and completed college, even going on to obtain a master¡¯s degree. Lex maintained a close relationship with his father, with both of his parents moving around to different cities within the San Francisco Bay Area. Growing up in the diverse Bay Area, Lex embraced his dual heritage and then some. A Black man raised in the South, Lex¡¯s father had learned Spanish and developed a special bond with Latin culture as an army private in a platoon of all Puerto Ricans. Shortly after Lex¡¯s birth, his father married a Mexican woman, giving Lex a sister and an extended family of Mexican Americans. Lex was brought up in a predominantly ethnic city public school system thru 8th grade, at which point his mother put him in a private high school in the suburbs. Commuting from urban Richmond, California, one hour each way, Lex excelled academically at a predominantly rich, white school, while maintaining close ties to his original crew from back home. During the same time, Lex bonded with a rhyme crew from East Oakland, called ¡°Tha Phenomz.¡± Traveling back and forth from the halls of a prestigious private high school to the streets and clubs of East Oakland, Lex truly learned how to balance two worlds. Following high school, Lex went on to Harvard College, where he studied East Asian Studies and Economics. During college, he continued to make music as a hobby, and his passion for creating hip-hop would not subside. He studied in Beijing, China, performing music there in English and Chinese at local clubs. Not long after graduation, Lex found himself taking the plunge into a career as a rap artist. He constantly travels the world, but maintains a home in Brooklyn¡¯s legendary Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood; home of hip-hop legends Jay-Z and Biggie Smalls. From the streets of East Oakland, to the green grass of Harvard Yard, to Israel, China, Mexico, and beyond, Lex truly has a new story to tell. Unafraid to share his experiences and relate to people of all backgrounds and cultures, there is no doubt that Lex will soon have an electrifying impact on hip-hop culture. |
