2006 Beijing Pop Festival Welcome to the 2nd edition of the Beijing Pop Festival- China’s largest and most distinguished annual international pop music festival. This year’s BPF is again at Chaoyang Park but on a completely different scale to last year’s inaugural festival. The 2006 BPF is over 2 days, 3 stages, and features over 25 artists from all over the world. A look at the programme will tell you that this year’s event finally resembles, in terms of artists and structure, something akin to a major European or American festival like Glastonbury or Coachella. The great music festivals have always been built on a solid foundation of legendary rock bands which is why this year’s festival promises more straight up Rock ‘N’ Roll than last year with an array of rock music genres on display from the Brit-rock of Placebo to the Brit pop of Supergrass to the heavy metal of Sebastian Bach to the garage soul of DHAT (Japan) to the electro rock of Don Juan Dracula (Norway). Not only are our headliners big names in the music industry- Placebo have received the top billing at just about every major music festival this year- but we have also carefully hand picked some of the hottest up and coming artists from around the globe to share their talents. For example, a band like New York’s Johnny Hi-Fi, whose songwriting is so tight and melodic and on a higher level than so many of its more famous contemporaries, deserves their music to be heard on a big stage. The same can be said for up and coming songstresses like Swedish starlet Karin Park- we just wanted to invite her while she still relatively a new artists…keep an eye out for these careers! The BPF would not be as effective an event if it neglected its duty to showcase the best of local talent, which is why we have again selected some of China’s most innovative and influential musicians to share the main Rock For China Stage with the other artists. Songwriters such as Muma and Xie Tian Xiao are very well known and respected in the Chinese modern music scene and this type of event may be what is needed for them to bring rock music up from China’s underground and into the mainstream. It is also worth noting that all artists on the roster will be giving full 60-90 minute performances. Aside from the music, we will also be featuring a major snowboarding event- “Big Air in Beijing”- presented by one of our main sponsors Burton Snowboarding Company. This is a sport event on a large scale with Burton designing and producing the Burton Stage and flying in many famous snowboarders from around the world to take part. Rock music and snowboarding have always worked well together and the idea of ramps and Seb Bach belting out Skid Row tunes is pretty exciting stuff. Fake snow will be all the rage come September! We will also feature a dance tent showcasing around 12 top DJs. The tent will feature a variety of genres from break-beat to drum n bass to chill out soul grooves to house music. This is a new addition to the festival and essential to creating a diverse ambience during the weekend. Rock For China Entertainment Ltd. has worked and will continue to work tirelessly to bring in major names and reveal up and coming ones. It will also always keep more than one ear and a helping hand to the development of the local music scene. And even though the Beijing Pop Festival is its marquee event RFCE believes that art, no matter how much in demand, should always be made affordable which is why we have kept ticket prices at extremely low levels (150RMB/Day, 260RMB/2 Days), especially when considering international and even local standards. Appreciation goes out to our presenter- the Beijing Music Festival. Our co-organizer- Poly Arts & Culture Co. Ltd. And especially to our main sponsors- Mastercard, RR Donnelley & Sons, Burton, Motorola, and SK- whose belief in what we do has never wavered from day one. Placebo singing ‘Every You Every Me’, Supergrass delivering ‘Alright’, Seb Bach screaming ‘Youth Gone Wild’…see you on the weekend of Sept.9-10 for an epic music experience! |
