Beijing Music Festival
The Beijing Music Festival, endorsed by the Ministry of Culture of China and the Beijing City Government, has become one of the grandest and most significant annual cultural events in Asia and has attracted artists and audiences from all over the world. The Festival offers a wide variety of styles of music to suit all tastes, and the audience can enjoy operas, symphonic and chamber music concerts, musicals, and even classical jazz performances.
The Beijing Music Festival Association is a non-profit organization and its funds come from generous contributions from around the world. Its objective is to promote the musical life in Beijing by organizing an annual festival providing musical performances by artists of the highest caliber.
The Festival has been held for eight years from 1998 to 2005. It lasts about 30 days from October to November and presents about 30 performances. Such world renowned artists as Jose Carreras, Augustin Dumay, Valery Gergiev, Fou Ts'ong, Krizysztof Penderecki, Sir James Galway, Melvyn Tan, Mischa Maisky, Yo-Yo Ma, Martha Argerich, Julian Lloyd Webber, Issac Stern, Jian Wang, Sarah Chang, Sir Simon Rattle, and Kathleen Battle have been invited to the Festival.
The Beijing Music Festival also puts an emphasis on music education. Each year's Festival offers free children's concert and students' concert. With the Education Department of the Central Conservatory, the Festival held ten cycles of Master Classes each year and won praises from all walks of life.
The Beijing Music Festival is now regarded as a grand occasion both for the audience and the sponsors. It has imparted great influence on the cultural life in Beijing and has greatly contributed to the cultural exchange between China and other countries.
